JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:            911 Dispatch Coordinator

DEPARTMENT:   Emergency Services

REPORTS TO:       Emergency Services / Emergency Management Director

STATUS:                 Full-Time, Exempt

SALARY:                 DOQ

SUMMARY: Supervises and manages the operation of the dispatch center, ensuring efficient and effective response to emergency calls, while also supervising and training dispatch staff, and maintaining records and procedures. Develops, recommends, and implements policies and procedures, ensures compliance with federal and state rules and regulations, provides direct services to consumers and administrative support to managers, directors, and other functional groups in emergency services, along with other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of dispatch center programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards
  • Plans, assigns, directs, reviews, documents, and evaluates the work of dispatch center personnel
  • Provides professional and technical training and professional development of dispatch center personnel
  • Supervise dispatch center day-to-day service and operations
  • Develops, maintains, and monitors staff scheduling and related human resource functions including, but not limited to the submission of payroll documents
  • Monitors and evaluates service quality to ensure compliance with service and procedural standards including but not limited to investigation of complaints with recommendations for corrective action
  • Coordinates dispatch center operations and activities with Emergency Services leadership and other agencies to ensure seamless and integrated operations and customer service
  • Coordinates dispatch response to major incidents
  • Serves on teams, committees, or other groups related to emergency services and public safety emergency communications
  • Assists in aspects of budget preparation and financial management
  • Monitors equipment and dispatch center technology to ensure proper operation and function.
  • Emergency Management duties and responsibilities as assigned during Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activations, exercises, training, special events, and/or emergency incidents.
  • Provides ongoing guidance and support to direct reports through coaching and counseling, and documents disciplinary actions in accordance with Lamar County policy.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Requires the initiative to work well with others and the ability to resolve problems
  • Requires multi-tasking ability to operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones, and computer systems
  • Must have vision corrected to 20/20 and/or be able to clearly read computer screens and information printed from a computer printer for periods of at least 12 hours in duration
  • Must be able to hear and understand English when spoken in a normal conversational tone in the presence of the speaker, and when transmitted via radio and telephone
  • Must be capable of speaking clearly and being understood when speaking in normal conversational tone in the presence of the speaker, and when transmitted via radio or telephone

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  •  Excellent customer service skills
  • Basic English skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Office experience
  • Must be able to type a minimum of 45-50 words per minute.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  •  Associate’s degree in a related field
  • 3 Years experience as a dispatcher
  • Progressive experience in dispatch operation and/or emergency service management may be substituted for the degree.

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Incident Command System (100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800) certification
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training
  • Other classes and training may be required by federal, state and local regulations
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch certification
  • Dispatcher Certification from a state approved 40 Hour Basic Dispatch Course

The 911 Dispatch Coordinator is considered essential personnel and is required to be present or on-call during emergencies or disasters.
