JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:            Investigator

DEPARTMENT:    Public Defender’s Office

REPORTS TO:       Public Defender

SALARY:                 $55,000.00

 

 JOB OBJECTIVE: The position of Investigator consists of investigating and assisting the Public Defender in the representation of indigent clients in Lamar County, along with other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Review case files for those clients assigned to the office to determine the need for additional investigation.
  2. Meet and/or speak with clients as needed to discuss their respective cases and to determine and locate possible witnesses and evidence.
  3. Interview witnesses to corroborate or refute evidence.
  4. Obtain various records as necessary to assist in the defense of or the mitigation of cases.
  5. Serve subpoenas for records or court appearances as necessary.
  6. Conduct research as may be required for the specific needs of cases.
  7. To be available for and assist attorney(s) in court proceedings.
  8. To answer phone calls, schedule appointments and perform other clerical duties as may be needed.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

  1. Utilize a computer to assess available information regarding clients from the jail management system and/or Circuit Court screen, or
  2. Utilize a computer to type letters, forms and any other documents that may be
  3. Perform other related duties as required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

_          Knowledge of court procedures and practices

_          Ability to access computer information contained in the court screens and from the jail management system

_          Skill in the operation of office equipment and computers

_          Ability to use various computer software programs, such as, word processing

_          Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

_          Ability to maintain confidential information

_          Ability to perform research both electronically and in the field

_          Ability to interact effectively with employees in other units of the organization, other departments, management, outside agencies and/or the general public

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for duration of employment in this position.

Preference will be given to individuals who are certified law enforcement officials.
