JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Shop Mechanic
DEPARTMENT: Road Department/Central Maintenance
REPORTS TO: Central Maintenance Supervisor
STATUS: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
SUMMARY: The Shop Mechanic is responsible for assisting in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of Lamar County’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. This includes light trucks, tractors, and heavy construction equipment. Shop Mechanic performs preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and supports higher-level mechanics in more complex mechanical work, along with other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on county vehicles and equipment (e.g., oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, tire inspections).
- Assist with diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems under the supervision of senior mechanics or Central Maintenance Supervisor.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the area and tools.
- Document maintenance performed on county maintenance logs and service records.
- Perform tire repairs, battery testing/replacement, and basic component swaps.
- Operate tools and diagnostic equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Respond to field repair calls as needed and perform minor mobile service tasks.
- Comply with all county safety policies and procedures, including the proper use of PPE.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have a valid MS Driver’s License.
- Must provide own standard hand tools necessary for performing mechanic duties.
- Must be physically able to perform these duties.
- Must be able to work Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Basis English skills;
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Vocational or technical training in automotive/diesel mechanics.
- Two (2) year of relevant work experience in a repair shop or fleet maintenance environment.
- Familiarity with basic tools, shop safety, and maintenance logs.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment and large vehicles is a plus.
