The Lamar County Assessor and Collector’s Office is made up of the following departments:
- Real Property Appraisal
- Personal Property (Business)
- Homestead
- Mobile Homes
- Motor Vehicles
These departments work together to appraise real and personal property within Lamar County, administer homestead applications, and generate property maps. All property values and exemptions are administered as of an effective lien date of January 1 each year.
Responsibilities and Duties
Tax Collector
- The broad range of duties of the Tax Collector include, but are not limited to:
- Collection of taxes on real property, personal property, manufactured homes, automobiles, motorcycles, motor homes, trailers, and airplanes
- Collection of use tax on items brought into the State of Mississippi by residents for first use, storage, or consumption.
- Sales tax is collected on casual sales of motor vehicles between individuals
- Advertise and hold an annual tax sale for any unpaid taxes on real estate or any special assessments
Tax Assessor
The broad range of duties of the Tax Assessor include, but are not limited to:
- Annually locate, class, and assess all taxable property within the county
- Setting the fair, uniform, and accurate value for each parcel of real and personal property
- Maintain current ownership maps of the county
- Coordinating needs analysis and purchase recommendations for technology systems
